LPU student killed as family in Phagwara attacks students’ birthday party

PHAGWARA: A student from North East, studying at Lovely professional University here and living in Phagwara at a rented house, was killed by members of a neighbouring family around midnight when he and his friends were celebrating birthday of one of their friends. The neighbor family first objected to the noise from the party and then attacked the students.

Victim Ashish Prasad, 20, a student of B. Tech third year (Mechanical) and originally hailing from Meghalya, succumbed to head injury in Civil Hospital, Phagwara while his fellow student and friend Aman Kumart was injured and is admitted at the Civil Hospital. Police have started recording latter's statement to register a case.

Ashish and some other students of LPU were living in a rented house in Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar near Akal Stadium. Phaghwara SP Parminder Singh Bhandal said that they were celebrating birthday of another student Rishabh, who lived in University Hostel but came to celebrate at his friends' place. He said that as students cheered when they cut the cake past midnight a family living opposite to the house objected.

After hurling abuses joint family of brothers duo Rahul Kumar and Ashok Kumar, first pelted stones on the house and then attacked them physically, SP said, adding they used wooden handle of an agriculture appliance to hit Ashish in his head and his friend Aman was hit with a baseball bat on his head. "The students did not confront the assailants rather some of them locked themselves in other rooms to escape the wrath of the neighbours but the two were caught by the assailants and they thrashed them badly," SP said.
