DUBAI: A driver who threatened to shame his would-be wife by publicising her alleged x-rated clip unless she agreed to meet him must pay a Dhs250,000 fine.
The Arab man,35, will also serve six months behind bars to be followed by deportation. The Dubai Criminal Court convicted him of blackmailing and threatening the countrywoman, 25.
It sentenced him to the prison term and deportation punishment and fined him Dhs250,000. He on Sept.6 deemed the charges baseless. However, the Appeals Court has upheld the penalty.
She told the Bur Dubai Police Station that from August to October 2015 he threatened to present her father a clip allegedly showing her with a certain man unless she met him to discuss the matter.
He also threatened to proliferate it on indecent websites. During court questioning on May 1 he denied and contended that she was his girlfriend and they used to exchange calls and messages.
He contended, “We were planning to get married. One day I was surfing the internet when I came across the video. I confronted her about it, but she claimed I threatened her to publicise it.”
She complained that they met on Facebook and kept in touch until the end of 2014. In mid 201, he requested to meet her over a matter concerning her. She refused. He pestered her for a meeting, telling her it was a sensitive matter. He claimed that he came across the video online. “He asked to meet me over the issue but I refused for I was sure he was lying. He continued texting me messages over the same. I told him to send me the video’s link but he insisted he would not show me anything until I meet him personally. I refused.
“He started sending me threatening messages aimed at blackmailing me into meeting him. I warned to report him to the police. He challenged me to do so, contacted me and shouted more threats.”
She eventually contacted the police. Forensic records discussed 104 messages between the convict and the victim, five of which contained threats.
