Ashes: Australia star Mitchell Starc fires warning to England batsmen

JOE ROOT’S shell-shocked England side have been warned by Mitchell Starc that Australia’s pace attack are only just hitting their straps.

Mitchell Starc warns England that Australia's bowlers can get even better

Predictions of an improved display in Perth next week from the pace trio of Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will not be what the tourists will be wanting to hear.

But Starc insisted he knows there was room for improvement despite the 120-run second Test win at the Adelaide Oval.

And a typical WACA pitch could be just the surface to bring it out, according to left-armer Starc.

He said: “The exciting thing for me is our bowling group can still get better.

“We’ve managed to take 40 wickets in the last couple of weeks and do some really good things. But I think there’s still a lot of room for improvement.

“We won’t know until we get to Perth next week but hopefully we see a nice, fast, bouncy wicket like a WACA of old and we can get stuck into their batters again as a bowling group.”

Perth has not produced the same sort of fireworks in recent years.

But with hot weather forecast for the next week, the chances of bounce and carry remain high.

Starc, who already has 14 wickets in the opening two Tests, added: “England had to give it their all during the week to get themselves into a position to have a chase in the fourth innings.

“And they came up short batting during the easiest time on day five.”

Craig Overton insists England are not panicking

Only one side Ashes history has come back from 2-0 down to win a series and that was Australia led by Don Bradman back in 1936-37.

England new boy Craig Overton, who came out with credit in the back after an impressive debut with bat and ball, is not pressing the panic button yet.

He said: “We are not panicking yet. We’ve shown glimpses in it the two games that we are not that far off so we are not too downbeat about what we can achieve out here.

“We can get a result in Perth then the series is back on.”

Meanwhile, Mark Wood has a chance to claim an England place in a two-day warm-up against a Cricket Australia XI on Friday.

The Durham paceman missed most of last season with a heel injury but is based in Perth with the second-string England Lions.
