PUNE: The city traffic police department caught 2,353 rule-breakers and collected Rs 4 lakh in fines on the first day of a special drive against traffic rule violations.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Ashok Morale told TOI that motorists continued to drive without wearing seat belts or helmets and jumped signals, despite making announcements on the special drive, titled 'Zero Tolerance Zones'. On Thursday, Morale said, the police installed had public address (PA) systems at 27 junctions.
With the help of these systems, the police will attempt to streamline vehicular movement at busy junctions. Also, the police have put up 300 traffic awareness posters at these junctions. Police have also mics with speakers at the chowks. A police constable at the chowk will keep an eye on motorists who park their vehicles on zebra crossings, jump signals, helmetless riders or drivers not using seat belts."
The constable will make an announcement by referring to the registration number, following which the rule violator will be taken off the road and asked to follow the traffic rules," Morale said. On Thursday, the special drive was executed on 28 stretches in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The entire strength of the traffic branch was on duty during the drive.
