NAGPUR: The Nagpur University (NU) final-year master of arts (MA) students might just find themselves in troubled waters as their third semester question papers, hall tickets and exam timetable are yet to be prepared. This means the fourth semester examinations are likely to be pushed to peak summer time, around April-May, followed by results in June.

Since October 23, TOI has highlighted about the delay in publishing MA third semester timetable.

Following the reports, top NU officials had assured to announce the timetable 'very soon' on three different occasions. The first date given was November 1 for timetable and November 14 for exams. November 20 was set as a later date but by that time several officials got busy in NU elections. Thus, it was decided to publish the timetable on December 5 which is now being scheduled for December 10.

Director, board of examinations and evaluation Neeraj Khaty admitted on Wednesday that there was pressure on NU to hold the MA third semester exam as early as possible.

"It is a matter of concern since the issue is related to final year students. We are aware that the delay will affect the future plans of the students for studies and jobs. We are working on the direction and ensure that the 90-day teaching period for the next semester is complied with," Khaty said.

He added that the exam could be held from December 20 onwards by giving the students 10 days before announcing the timetable.

On being probed about the reason, Khaty said there were still some mistakes in exam forms as well as lack of clarity in the direction. "Choice-based credit system (CBCS) was implemented for this batch. But, there are also backlog students who would appear as per credit based system (CBS). The colleges have not selected subjects as per the CBCS pattern for regular students. For two courses, electives and foundation courses are not correct," he said.

Earlier, NU officials had said that the timetable was already prepared but it was waiting for new direction regarding the course.

On this, Khaty said the timetable can be notified any moment but the question papers have to be readied. "I have to prepare 1,200 question sets for the 29 MA courses," he said.

The fiasco is a result of differences between the academic section and the exam section regarding course direction. The academic section had notified a common direction for all UG and PG courses for implementing CBCS pattern. But, the exam section wanted a separate direction for MA since the colleges had opted for multiple electives and foundation courses.
