PUNE: A gang of men thrashed a 65-year-old security guard at an ATM kiosk in Lonavla and stole Rs9.88 lakh from the machine in the early hours of Wednesday.
They used a gas cutter to cut open one of the two cash dispensers at the kiosk to retrieve the cash.
Before fleeing, the suspects took the guard, Suresh Kapse, with them and let him go near Kikvi village on the outskirts of Bhor, around 40km from here on the Pune-Bengaluru highway. Kaspe immediately contacted his son.
A case has been registered under IPC sections 395 (dacoity) and 363 (kidnapping) at the Lonavla City police station.
The kiosk is located at Damodar Colony in Bhangarwadi, Lonavla. Around 2.30am on Wednesday, two cars drove up to the kiosk. Five men got out of one car, barged into the kiosk and shoved Kapse off his chair. "They kicked, punched him, and tied him up and pushed him into the car," said D N Shivthare, deputy superintendent of police (Pune Rural).
They drove off while their accomplices in the second car, stole with the cash.
An hour later, the five men dumped Kapse near a restaurant and fled.
Shivthare said their probe has revealed that the CCTV camera inside the kiosk had not been working since October.
