Beur jail on alert after bid to kill guard in Kolkata prison

PATNA: The Beur central jail administration is on alert after ISIS suspect Mohammad Mosiruddin alias Abu Musa attempted to kill a guard inside Alipore Central Jail in Kolkata on Monday (December 4).

Sources said NIA undertrial prisoner Musa managed to procure and pierce an iron nail into a prison guard's neck when his cell door was opened in the morning. The guard was seriously injured. NIA sources said he was the first lone wolf attacker in India who was planning to kill foreigners and his name had also cropped up in 2005 bombings in London and at Times Square in the USA.

Beur jail has ten suspected terrorists owning allegiance to terror outfit Indian Mujahideen. They were involved in the Bodh Gaya temple and Gandhi Maidan serial bomb blasts that took place on July 7 and October 27 in 2013 respectively. Five persons, including two Buddhist monks, were injured in the temple blasts while six persons had been killed in Patna.

Sources said the 10 prisoners are lodged in two separate wards of Beur jail. "They are not allowed to interact with others. They are taken out only when required for production before special NIA court," a source said.


These terror suspects had clashed with two security personnel inside Beur jail in October last year and had also allegedly raised anti-national slogans. They had protested the inspection of food served to them. Since then, they have been confined to their prison wards.


IG (Prisons) Anand Kishor said security of terror suspects has been increased after the Kolkata incident.


ADG (headquarters) S K Singhal said he would have to look into the issue that why videoconferencing facility has not yet been made available for the terror suspects even though several jails in the state have this facility.
