NEW DELHI: Left leaders said on Wednesday the timing of the government's push for daily hearings of the Babri masjid-Ram temple title case was suspect and alleged it was meant to polarise the Gujarat elections on communal lines.
Citing the principles of natural justice, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, "In our opinion, the case that should have been taken up first was the litigation related to the demolition of the Babri masjid. This has been pending for 25 years and the chargesheets and all related documents are in place. It is only after the case around the crime that was committed — Babri demolition — is resolved that the Ayodhya title case should be heard."
On Twitter, Yechury also posted: "Remembering Dr BR Ambedkar. Let us not forget: those who demolished the Babri Masjid chose his death anniversary to attack the foundations of the secular constitution given to us by the drafting committee headed by him."
Leaders of six Left parties also led a protest in the national capital on Wednesday, urging the government to punish those responsible for the demolition of the mosque in Ayodhya. Observing December 6, the day the 16th century mosque was demolished 25 years ago, as a "Black Day" for democracy, CPM, CPI, CPML, Yechury also said the Left parties have pledged to launch a struggle against the alleged "communal polarisation" being encouraged by the RSS and BJP.
Speaking to TOI, CPI secretary D Raja said, "How can the BJP put the contruction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya in its manifesto? It is nothing but a blatant attempt to influence the judiciary and to divide the country on communal lines. The only supreme power is the Indian constitution— it is the only gideline the court will follow. There is no space for theocracy in the Constitution of India."
Referring to the actions on December 6 1992 as the BJP's "wilful demolition" of the Babri mosque, the Left leaders held botht the Congress and the BJP responsible for the demolition. "The reality is that 25 years down the line, not a single person has been punished or sent to jail on the criminal act of destroying the Babri Masjid," CPM politburo member Brinda Karat said.
