Snag triggers 1-hour blackout in twin cities

Noida/Greater Noida: A technical snag left all of Noida and Greater Noida without power for over an hour on Wednesday evening.

Akshay Kapoor, a resident of Sector 11, complained of no electricity for an hour. On the other hand, Sector 18 market association president S K Jain said there was no power in the market early on Wednesday evening.

Complaints came pouring from all over as shops in the market and residents switched to power back-up, inverters and generators amidst confusion. There was no initially clarity on the cause of the blackout as the cold weather ruled out excess power demand.

According to Rakesh Kumar, superintending engineer PVVNL, the 400 kV Pali substation had tripped briefly due to a technical snag, which led to the sudden power outage in the district.

Rajiv Goyal, general manager (operations), Noida Power Company Ltd (NPCL) in Greater Noida, also confirmed that a technical snag at the 400 kV Pali substation lead to the blackout in the district from 5.48 pm to 6.50 pm.

"A technical fault developed on the 220 kV RC Green Substation line in Greater Noida. This line comes from the 400 kV Pali substation. Despite our efforts the fault persisted and it led to the tripping of the substation at 5.48 pm. This resulted in the failure of supply to all of Noida and Greater Noida," said Goyal.

Even as work on isolating the fault continued leading to resumption of three substations subsequently, full power supply to the district was only resumed at 6.50 pm except RC Green substation in Greater Noida, which finally resumed power from 7.30 pm.
