PUNE: The traffic police will launch an indefinite 'zero tolerance drive' in various parts of the city from Thursday onwards.
Strict action will be taken against the traffic violators and they will be penalised on the spot.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Ashok Morale said 28 stretches, one in each traffic division in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, have been identified for the initiative. "Each stretch is of up to two km," he added.
Morale said that the plan is to minimise traffic violations across the city. People are requested to carry all the necessary documents with them.
Motorists will be fined for jumping traffic signals, not wearing helmets or seat belts, driving on the wrong side of the road, stopping on zebra crossings, riding triple seat, entering no-entry lanes, illegal parking, etc. Action will also be taken against illegal tinted glasses on car windows.
"At the same time, the traffic department will ensure that the traffic signals are in working condition and that proper sign boards are put up at various junctions and zebra crossings," Morale said.
Personnel from the traffic department will visit housing societies and schools to spread awareness about traffic rules and to stress on the importance of following traffic norms, Morale said. "The measures are being taken to improve traffic conditions and reduce road casualties," he added.
