The Celtics were down by 10 at the half and shooting poorly from the field.

They were just 38 per cent in the first half as opposed to Dallas' 48.

And both Terry Rozier and Marcus Smart were zero-for-three attempts each

But Boston rallied back in the third led by Al Horford recording a near triple-double.

There were also MVP cheers for Kyrie Irving down the stretch as he sunk several crucial shots.

Dallas began the final quarter three points ahead of Boston but Irving scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter

The Celtics are now 22-4 for the season having won four of their five at home but they now go on a three-game trip away from the TD Garden.

This comes from a team that underwent a massive overhaul in the summer, including letting the likes of Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder leave.

Kyrie Irving was always going to be a star but even Stevens suggests he has been surprised at how fast they new unit have gelled.

"I feel good about where we're heading, we've got a long way to go," Steven said.

"The number one concern going into the season was going to be familiarity and learning how to play together.

"Defensively we've shown an ability to do that.

"We've added some coverages which we're not great at yet but will get better  as we go through the season.

"Offensively we've improved so - you're not going to have it every night but if you can do it most of the time then you've got a good chance."
