PUNE: A 30-year-old jobless engineer, addicted to alcohol, allegedly slit his father's throat and strangled his mother in their two-bedroom flat in Shaniwar Peth early on Wednesday.

His twin, sister-in-law and niece were sleeping in the second bedroom. They heard a commotion in their parents' room around 2.30am on Wednesday but ignored it as the fights were a daily ordeal, police said.

Parag Prakash Kshirsagar, the man police suspect is the killer, forced his brother Pratik to open his bedroom door around 7.30am. When Pratik found that Parag had inflicted injuries on his hand, he pacified him, went back to his room and slept. Pratik told the police that he was not aware that his parents had been murdered at that time.

The murder came to light around 9am when Pratik's wife came out of their bedroom and saw blood stains in the living room. When she checked on her in-laws, Prakash's (60) and Asha's (55) room, she saw their bodies. She alerted her husband and their neighbours. Manoj Gode, a resident of the society, called the police control room.

A team from Vishrambaug police station took Parag into their custody. They said their probe shows that Parag is a disturbed man undergoing treatment. He is also seeking counseling for alcoholism, they added .

They did not rule out the possibility of the murders being committed by Parag in a drunken stupor. He was arrested under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code after his brother Pratik lodged a complaint.

"We have sent Parag to Sassoon General Hosptial for a medical check. He is the suspect in the murders. We have to question him," deputy commissioner of police Pravin Mundhe told TOI.

Late night quarrel

Parag had frequent run-ins with his parents, especially his father Prakash, for not giving him money to start a business in providing private security. Pratik told the police that on Tuesday afternoon, an inebriated Parag fought with their father and threatened him. Pratik sent him to meet the group that helps alcoholics. After the meeting, Parag met a few friends. He called home asking about dinner and abused his parents when he found that the food was not to his liking.

Pratik and Parag dined out at a restaurant where Parag drank beer and the brothers came home after midnight. "After an hour, Pratik heard Parag knocking on his bedroom door, but he did not open it," an officer from the Vishrambaug police said.

Pratik told the police he heard a commotion in their parents' bedroom around 2.30am, but ignored it. "Around 7.30am, Parag knocked on Pratik's bedroom door again, screaming for help. Pratik found an injured Parag, calmed him down and took him to a sofa in the living room. He waited till Parag went to sleep and thought of talking to him after he woke up. He went back to his bedroom," a police officer said.

Two hours later, Pratik's wife came out of the bedroom and she saw blood stains on the floor. She found her mother-in-law lying dead in the study room adjacent to their bedroom with a nylon rope around her neck. When she entered the bedroom, she found her father-in-law on the bed with his throat slit, the officer added.

Prima facie, it appears that Parag may have smothered his father with a pillow and slit his throat, and then strangled his mother with a rope, the officer said.
