Slamming what it alleged ''attempts to create obstacles'' in the way of construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday demanded a legislation by Parliament for a Ram temple on the lines of Somnath temple in Gujarat.
VHP also accused the Congress of trying to ''delay'' and ''prevent'' construction of the temple through senior party leader Kapil Sibal, who is representing the Sunni Central Waqf Board in Supreme Court in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case. .
Sibal had, during the hearing of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits in the apex court on Tuesday, sought deferment of the hearing until after the next Lok Sabha election in 2019.
''Muslim parties are running away from the court hearing.....they do not want an early resolution of the matter....it is because they know that they will lose the case,'' said VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma here on Wednesday.
Speaking to DH, Sharma said the VHP as well as saints and religious leaders wanted a Ram temple at the birth place of Lord Rama.
''In view of the delaying tactics adopted by the Muslim parties to the dispute, the government should get Parliament to pass a legislation paving the way for Ram temple construction,'' he said.
'No compromise'
Sharma also categorically ruled out any compromise on the issue and said that negotiations could not resolve the issue. ''It is a matter of faith for millions of Hindus across the world.....there is no question of any give and take on the issue,'' he added.
VHP observed 'shaurya diwas' (bravery day) on Wednesday, the 25th anniversary of the Babri masjid demolition. A programme was organised inside the VHP office at Karsevakpuram here, which was addressed by the saffron leaders.
