The rupee on Wednesday opened 5 paise down at 64.43 against dollar amid a caution ahead of the RBI monetary policy decision.

The local currency on Tuesday closed almost flat at 64.38 against the US dollar. The RBI, meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 64.3764 and for the euro at 76.3762.

There are expectations that the RBI may keep interest rates unchanged on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, domestic equity markets opened marginally in the red. BSE Sensex opened 3.94 points, or 0.01 per cent, down at 32,798.50, while NSE Nifty index opened 29.45 points, or 0.29 per cent, down at 10,088.

Foreign portfolio investors stood net sellers in secondary markets on Tuesday and sold shares worth Rs 244 crore with gross purchases and gross sales stood at Rs 4011.46 crore and Rs 4255.51 crore, respectively.

Government bonds rose for the first time in three sessions on Tuesday, on value buying after prices fell to record lows a day before, even as investors await the Monetary Policy Committee’s decision.

The GoI benchmark 6.79% 2027 bond yield moved 2 basis points lower to 7.06 per cent from 7.08 per cent in the previous session.
