MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to be an even bigger juggernaut next year as the eight franchises will end up spending anywhere between Rs 480-640 crore on players alone.

The IPL Governing Council, in its meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, has upped the player cap for the franchises for the next three years. The franchises are now allowed to spend up to Rs 80 crore in 2018, compared to Rs 66 crore in 2017.

In the subsequent years, the franchises will be allowed to shell out Rs 82 crore (in 2019) and Rs 85 crore (in 2020). Franchises will have to spend a minimum of 75% of the salary cap for each season, the GC clarified.

Meanwhile, on the player retention policy, franchises have been allowed to secure a maximum of five players through a combination of pre-auction retention and Right to Match (RTM) cards.

However, a maximum of three players can be retained or can be matched. So, if a franchise does not to directly retain any player, it will be allowed a maximum of three RTMs at the auctions.

In the secured players, a team may pick a maximum number of 3 capped Indian players, maximum of 2 overseas players, and a maximum of 2 uncapped Indian players.

With respect to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), which are returning after a two year ban, the GC has decided that the player pool available for the franchises will be the players' who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and who were part of Rising Pune Super Giants and Gujarat Lions' squads in IPL 2017.

On the player retention, if a team chooses to retain three players, a total of Rs 33 crore will be deducted from its auction purse (Rs 15 crore, Rs 11 crore and Rs 7 crore, for three players, respectively). However, in case it chooses to retain two players, Rs 21 crore will be deducted (Rs 12.5 crore and Rs 8.5 crore), while for retaining just one player, Rs 12.5 crore will be deducted from the auction purse.
