Centre wants to double tourist growth in Northeast in 3 years

Govt will also hold tourism roadshow in Thailand to promote tourist growth in Northeast India.
GUWAHATI: Union ministry of tourism is targeting to double the tourist growth rate in Northeast India from present 5.2 percent in next three years. The ministry is in in talks with BIMSTEC and ASEAN countries to devise packages to increase tourist inflow in Northeast India.

Reshmi Verma, secretary ministry of tourism who was in Guwahati on Wednesday to attend the 6th international tourism mart said, "Tourism sector grew at the rate of 9.8 percent last year and this year growth rate is around is 15.8 percent, the sector witnessed 5.2 percent growth rate in Northeast India. "

She said that Northeast India registered 77 lakh domestic tourists and 1.6 lakh foreign tourist in last few years. "We will promote Northeast India as one destination with aggressive marketing strategy and tourist packages."

Verma added good number of new flights are being introduced in the region. The ministry is pumping in close to Rs 1200 Crore for 14 projects in the eight states of the region. "While individual North eastern states will continue to promote themselves with their own brand entity and tag line. We are working on the inter country packages besides thematic packages like Wildlife tourism, eco-tourism and adventure tourism for Northeast India."

The tourism secretary informed that government is working with border countries so that tourist coming bordering countries like Nepal can come to India. "We are working out packages with BIMSTEC and ASEAN countries. Very soon we will have a tourism roadshow in Thailand. With this efforts we expect the growth of tourism in Northeast India will commensurate with the growth of tourism in the country.

Assam tourism minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said club Mahindra is going to set up a resort in Assam and an MOU in this regard will be signed in February next year.

The minister said, "Under the Udan scheme, 92 bidder have bided for regional air connectivity in Northeast India. This scheme will connect the small airstrips of Northeast India and will be a big boost to tourism industry."

The 6th international tourism mart is attended by 67 foreign delegates from 29 countries.
