Banani businessman killed as expat friend directs: Cops

DHAKA: Banani’s Munshi Overseas owner Siddik Hossain was murdered upon a contract from one of his Bangladeshi expatriate friends, law enforcers said on Wednesday (December 6).

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes Unit (CTTC) Chief Md Monirul Islam said in a press briefing at DMP Media Centre that they revealed the leads in the murder, through interrogating Helal Uddin, the mastermind of the killing mission.

“Helal was the main planner. He also supplied the arms used in the murder”, said Monirul Islam.

Detective Branch (DB) of police nabbed Helal from Kalachandpur area of Gulshan Tuesday (December 5). Five firearms were also recovered from his possession.

However, the CTTC chief said that Helal took the ‘hit job’ in contract from the friend of the slain businessman five days ahead of the murder. Helal played the role of ‘operational commander’ in the mission.

However, Monirul didn’t disclose the name of the ‘friend’ for protecting privacy of the case.

However, the man is a Chhatra Dal leader, Monirul said.

Besides, Helal is also a probable mid-level of the student wing of BNP, he added.

During interrogation, Helal admitted that he was present at the spot while the office of Munshi Overseas was stormed but he didn’t take part in the mission directly.
As many as six arms and 25-26 rounds of bullets were used in the mission that left Siddik killed and three others injured, at Banani road no.4 on November 14.

Police recovered five of the arms from Helal.

The slain businessman’s wife Joshna Begum, as a plaintiff, filed a case with Banani Police Station, accusing four people over the incident.

Banani Police Station later handed over the case to DB.
