Bike stunt goes awry, 15-yr-old boy falls from flyover to death

| | New Delhi

A 15-year-old schoolboy was killed while his 17-year-old pillion-ridding friend is battling for life at a Government hospital after he lost balance while performing bike stunts and fell over 50 feet down from yet-to-open Mukundpur flyover on Tuesday morning.

Though the flyover is yet to open to the public, there is no signage or guard of Public Works Department near the flyover, police said.

While sources said it was a case of “bike stunts going wrong”, police said they are probing whether the two were performing stunts.

While we know that as a family, it is our negligence that we let our child go with a bike, the Public Works Department of the Delhi Government is equally responsible for the mishap. There is no barricade, no guard or no sign to warn that the flyway is under construction and yet to open to the public,” said an uncle of Karan, the deceased.

According to police, they received a call around 7.30 am regarding the two people lying unconscious. Both were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital by a passerby.

On enquiry, it was found that the duo were residents of Mukundpur.  The deceased Karan Dutt, alias Kanu, aged 15, was a Class VIII student, and his pillion-ridding friend has been identified as Akash (17).

Karan lived in a joint family at Mukundpur Part II. Devender Dutt, the deceased’s father runs a cloth shop, and his mother Rinku Dutt is a housewife. Karan was the eldest of their two sons.

Family members of the deceased said Karan often sneaked out of the house with his cousin’s Bullet motorcycle and used to practice riding the bike near the house. However, they were clueless how they had reached the under-construction flyover.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Aslam Khan said, “The duo lost balance due to over-speeding at a curve on the flyover hitting the boundary railing and then getting flipped over.”

“After hitting the boundary, the bike remained on the flyover as the two fell off,” said Aslam, adding “Akash sustained multiple injuries and was battling for life and Karan was declared brought dead by doctors.”

Police did not rule out possibility of “bike stunts went wrong” leading the death. “We are probing whether they were performing bike stunt,” they said. Arvind, brother-in-law of Karan, told The Pioneer that they received a call about Karan’s death around 8.30 am.

“At the time of the accident, Karan was not wearing helmet. He suffered critical head injuries.

Police said that they have registered a case under Sections 279 (Rash driving), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the IPC at the Jahangirpuri police station.
