Full court reference in Himachal HC in memory of ex-CJI Anand

A full reference was made in the High today in the memory of former Chief Justice of Adarsh Sein Anand and former judge of the high Surinder Sarup.

Both Justice Anand and Justice Sarup died on December 1.


Speaking on the occasion, Acting Chief Justice Sanjay Karol said that Justice Adarsh Sein Anand was a great jurist and eminent scholar, who was elevated as the Additional Judge of High of at the age of 39 years.

He rendered many landmark judgments in the field of gender equality and human rights.

Justice Karol also said that Justice Anand had a great zeal to protect human rights and as such he was also elected as Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission in 2003.

Justice Anand was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in in 2008 for his contribution to the society.

On Justice Surinder Sarup, the Acting Chief Justice said that he had a great experience in the field of and was known for his mannerism.

Justice Surinder Sarup remained as judge of the Himachal High from April 6, 1996 to April 20, 2000 and also remained the President of HP State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for nearly five years.

Two minutes' silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
