CHENNAI: The North-East monsoon has given a fresh lease of life to the drying city acquifers as ground water levels in 15 observatory wells in various parts of the city improved from .55 metres to 2.88 metres.

The city, which was reeling under one of the worst water crisis, was totally dependent on  groundwater and in many places wells had nearly dried up. Now, the observatory wells after the heavy rain have recorded more water this November when compared to last year’s readings.

Metrowater said water levels in Perungudi dipped by 4.59 metres the previous year and now it has increased to 1.71 metres. Similarly, Alandur groundwater was also stressed out last year with groundwater level dipping by 3.87 metre. This year water can be fetched at a depth of 1.43 metres.

A Metrowater spokesman said ground water levels undergo seasonal fluctuation throughout the year. Hence, comparison has to be done with the same month of previous year and not between different months.

Two-metre rise in water level

Water level in Perungudi, Alandur, Valasaravakkam and Ambattur have improved significantly by more than two metres when compared to last year
