The Spaniard picked up a knee injury which caused him to cut short his season at the year-end ATP Finals in November.
Nadal went beyond all expectations in 2017 to finish the season ranked number one in the world, ahead of Rodger Federer.
He also claimed two Grand Slams - the French and US Opens - before he picked up the knee problem.
And now the 31-year-old wants to make the remarkable year even better by returning to the court before the turn of the year.
