Live Cricket Score, India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test, Day 5: Visitors Continue To Hold India Off In Delhi

With just two more sessions remaining on the final day of the third Test, India need six wickets to win the series 2-0, while Sri Lanka need 291 runs to level it 1-1. Overnight batsmen Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews started the day for Sri Lanka adopting a cautious approach. But, birthday boy Ravindra Jadeja struck early and removed former Lanka captain Angelo Mathews for 1 to give India an early breakthrough. Jadeja bowled a gem of a delivery as he forced Mathews to take a forward stride for a defensive push, with the ball spinning and taking an edge off the bat, Ajinkya Rahane at first slip took a comfortable catch. But, the on-field umpire failed to spot the no-ball bowled by Jadeja as Mathews took the long way back. Following which, De Silva took the attack to the bowlers and smashed few boundaries to steady the ship along with captain Dinesh Chandimal. At lunch, Chandimal and De Silva have stitched together an unbeaten 84-run partnership. Just before lunch, it looked like Jadeja had struck again and castled Chandimal with a ripper. However, this time the on-field umpires did not take a chance and went for a referral on the front foot. Chandimal survived a scare as Jadeja, like his first wicket, had overstepped while bowling this delivery too. Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja created a couple of chances during the first session but the Lankan batsmen left them frustrated with their defensive technique. The ever-accurate Jadeja starred with the ball as he ended the first session with the figures of three for 25. The morning session was a battle of attrition for the Sri Lankans with De Silva showing positive intent going for his strokes.

09:00 IST: Hello and welcome to the live blog of the final day of the third Test between India and Sri Lanka straight from Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi.

Skipper Virat Kohli (50 off 58 balls), Rohit Sharma (50 off 49 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (67 off 91 balls) made useful contributions as India declared at 246 for five, with an overall lead of 409 runs. With a cushion of 163-run first innings lead, the Indian batsmen showed intent to score quick runs, scoring at a rate of 4.70 in the 52.2 overs they batted in the second innings. It was a 77-run stand in 17.2 overs for the third wicket between Cheteshwar Pujara (49 off 66 balls) and Dhawan in the post lunch session that set the platform for Kohli and Rohit to accelerate in the final session. The Indian skipper and his limited overs deputy added 90 runs in only 15.2 overs.
