UK parking fine hotspots REVEALED - Here's where you're most likely to be fined

NEW research has revealed the parking fine hotspots across the UK and how lucrative certain areas can be to councils.

The top parking fine black spots in the UK have now been revealed.

, Edinburgh and Glasgow were found to be the areas where drivers are most likely to receive a parking fine.

The major ticket hotspots in were found to be on Shaftesbury Avenue and Great Windmill Street in Westminster, where almost a quarter of fines were issued.

Edinburgh issued the next highest amount of fines across Britain with 58,994  Penalty Charge Notices issued.

Parking fines in Edinburgh accounted for over half the fines issued in Scotland, generating £2.3 million of revenue.

Glasgow came in third, issuing 33,693 fines followed by Birmingham, Leeds and Wolverhampton.

Incredibly, these parking fines have generated millions of pounds of revenue over the past three months.

According to the Freedom of Information data obtained by comparethemarket.com, London issued a total of 549,009 Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) across 10 boroughs between July and September 2017, generating revenues of over £24 million.

The car insurer also looked at how long it took for cars to receive a PCN after the ticket expired.

It set up hidden cameras in the cars to record how long it took a warden to ticket it.

Unsurprisingly, it took the shortest amount of time for a driver to be ticketed in London with the car getting slapped with a fine after but 12 minutes.

Motorists need to be extra vigilant when it comes to something as simple as parking their vehicle correctly

Simon McCulloch, Director at comparethemarket.com

"With Christmas on the horizon, a £70 parking fine would be a very unwelcome present!

“Penalty Charge Notices can be issued for several reasons. It could be for parking somewhere you shouldn’t, failing to show a valid parking ticket, or displaying an expired ticket.

"Other offences include breaking traffic rules, such as going against a ‘no right turn’ sign, or driving in a bus lane.

"With the cost of driving getting more and more expensive, unexpected cost like a parking fine can be difficult to swallow.

“If you do find yourself with a PCN, it’s worth checking your ticket, as you can often reduce the fee by half, simply by paying it within 7 or 14 days, depending on your local council.

"You should also consider appealing against the PCN, but only if you feel that you have been unfairly ticketed."

Comparethemarket.com issued FOIs to every council in the UK requesting the number of fines issued, the revenue generated, and the most popular street or carpark where fines are issued.

Data was compiled based on 265 responses, looking at a period of three months.
