Chelsea news: Lampard wants the Blues to face Besiktas in the Champions League draw

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid last night and with Roma beating Qarabag 1-0, Antonio Conte’s side had to settle for second place in Group C.

The draw for the first knockout round takes place on Monday and the Blues can be paired with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain or Besiktas, who all topped their group.

Speaking after the draw to Atletico, Lampard was pleased with Chelsea’s performance despite being wasteful in front of goal.

“I think it was good,” the ex-England man said on BT Sport.

“I think in terms of general play they did everything they had to do. They were very solid in the first half without being spectacular.

Frank Lampard on Chelsea's potential Champions League opponents

“They went 1-0 down to a mistake, they responded very well and just some nights those goals don’t go in.

“So let’s hope they draw Besiktas on Monday and they don’t have to worry about it, we’ll see.”

Lampard’s BT colleague and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen agreed but also does not think Barcelona or PSG will want to face Chelsea in the next round of the Champions League either.

“Eden Hazard’s right to say ‘we’re Chelsea, people will be worried about us’ and they will,” Owen said.

Chelsea news: Owen agrees Besiktas is the best opponent for Chelsea in the Champions League last-16

“Nobody will want to draw Chelsea, especially in this next round.

“Okay, you expect to draw the big boys in the quarters and semis, but in this round you’re hoping for a bit of a soft touch in many ways.

“Everybody will be looking at a team like Besiktas and thinking ‘let’s hope we get them’.

“With all due respect, good team, but at this stage, when you can draw Barca or PSG or Besiktas, we all know who Chelsea will be hoping for.”
