GHAZIABAD: The trash burning issues are not just limited to residential colonies or public places; trash is being burnt on regular basis with exemption right under the nose of district administration. Be it the collectorate, district courts, or offices of senior superintendent of police, sales tax and chief development officer, dry leaves and wastes from nearby shops are disposed of here most days by burning.

With the winter setting in, the frequency of trash burning across the city has increased.

Exasperated with the prevailing situation, a social organisation, Hindon Jal Biradari, on Tuesday lodged a complaint with Kavi Nagar police seeking an action against the erring officials. As per NGT norms, open trash burning attracts a fine of Rs5,000. The NGO members said if police fail in lodging an FIR, they will get it registered through a court order.

Kavi Nagar SHO Samarjeet Singh said a complaint has been received and they are looking into the matter. "Despite the high pollution levels in the city, there is no mechanism in place to deal with this alarming situation. Hundreds of people visit the administrative offices on a daily basis and become a victim of smoke and pollution. The entire area gets covered in haze and smoke," said lawyer-activist Vikrant Hindon, who runs the NGO.

Moreover, such fires are a threat to public property and government offices as they may lead to a major fire someday. On Tuesday, trash was burnt at many places in the administrative area, and a call was made to police control room, he added.

When contacted, CP Singh, commissioner, Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, said, "We are implementing the NGT's order strictly. So far, the revenue from fines for burning trash amounts to Rs 3 lakh. Two FIRS have also been registered. We will definitely inspect the administrative block and look for ways to mitigate the problem." District magistrate Ritu Maheshwari could not be contacted despite several attempts.
