Pietermaritzburg - A man believed to be in his 30s has been shot dead in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Wednesday morning.

Police say the deceased was attacked by four armed men who also robbed him of his firearm before they fled on foot.

The shooting occurred at about 07:05 at the corners of Church and Flatter Road.

"The police managed to arrest three suspects and one is still at large," Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane told News24.

A case of murder is being investigated by Pietermaritzburg police, Zwane said.

ER24 paramedics spokesperson Russel Meiring said their paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained several gunshot wounds which left him in a critical condition.

He said the man was treated for his injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions.

"During treatment, paramedics found that the patient’s vital signs were rapidly diminishing. CPR and further advanced life support interventions were initiated in an effort to revive the patient. Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned and the man was declared dead," he said.
