French rock 'n' roll icon *Johnny Hallyday* has died.

AFP News Agency reports that the rock singer has passed away at the age of 74, following a battle with lung cancer.

Johnny Hallyday's wife Laeticia said: "Johnny Hallyday has left us. I write these words without believing them. But yet, it's true. My man is no longer with us. He left us tonight as he lived his whole life, with courage and dignity."

A huge star in the Francophone world, Johnny Hallyday sold more than 100 million records becoming known to the French as simply 'Our Johnny'.

A performer whose appeal spanned generations, the singer also starred in numerous films, also while being barely known in the English speaking sphere.

Real name Jean-Philippe Smet, he was spurred on to try rock 'n' roll after witnessing an Elvis Presley film, and never looked back.

French President Emmanuel Macron was among those paying tribute: "There is a little bit of Johnny in all of us. Across generations, he carved himself into the lives of French people. He charmed them through the generosity you saw in his concerts: so epic, so intimate, in huge venues, in small spots."

The politician was joined by numerous other tributes:

Farewell Dear @JohnnySjh. Your friendship, sweetness and support are imprinted in my heart. It is an honor to have known you and to have spent time with you and your beautiful family. Your soul is pure Rock and Roll.
