LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

RIP, Shashi Kapoor

| | New Delhi
Bollywood legend Shashi Kapoor, who died after a prolonged illness at 79, was a true pioneer of modern cinema. He was the first Bollywood actor to get a chance to act in Hollywood and who avidly essayed a variety of roles in quality British films.  He was a keen theatre lover.  He had to struggle a lot to keep the banner of Prithvi Theatre alive despite being a member of the privileged Kapoor khandaan. He got success in many movies such as Jab Jab Phool Khile, Deewaar, Trishul, Kabhie Kabhie and Satyam Shivam Sundaram.  His dialogue in Deewar — Mere paas Maa hai — still haunts us.  He was honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan. He won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in Deewaar and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. He also won the National Film Award for best actor in New Delhi Times. Several songs picturised on him were a hit. He shall be in the hearts of Bollywood lovers for a long time. May his soul rest in peace.
