GUWAHATI: The volatile political arena of Arunachal Pradesh, where the BJP is in power, appears to be headed for an upheaval yet again.
State BJP president Tapir Gao told TOI that the leader of opposition, Takam Pario of the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) — the state's only regional party — attempted to topple the Pema Khandu-led government in the state.
"It all started during the assembly session in October, when Pario said PPA supported BJP in the Presidential election as well as the GST bill, but BJP kicked his party out of the alliance nonetheless. The chief minister's reply was taken as an insult to the Nyishi community and Pario tried to dislodge the government," Gao said. Local papers had reported the chief minister had compared Pario, a senior Nyishi leader, to a dog while responding to a speech made by him in the assembly in October.
In the 60-member Arunachal assembly — which has an effective strength of 58 — BJP has 46 MLAs, PPA has nine and Congress has one. Two MLAs are Independents.
