Unite union against RBS branches closures

(MENAFN) The Unite union has sent a letter to the Business Minister Paul Wheelhouse, saying the decision of the Royal Bank of Scotland to close 62 branches was "morally bankrupt".

It said that RBS has gone back on a promise never to shut down a branch when it was "the last bank in town".

Wheelhouse said powers over banking are still in the hands of the UK government, but he would try to discuss with Unite officials "what pressure we can jointly put on the UK government".

According to the Treasury, after the closures were declared, it did not meddle with commercial decisions, and also emphasized that the majority of areas affected by closures would have either a community banker or mobile branch available.
