NOIDA: Noida Authority on Tuesday has initiated an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting NGOs for undertaking various field activities pertaining to sanitation and waste management in Noida. The selected company will be responsible to make the city clean and litter-free by involving all stakeholders.
According to Noida Authority officials, the selected NGO will provide feasible and sustainable solutions based on ground realties of the city for a cleaner Noida. "The NGO or group of NGOs will primarily be used for creating awareness and sensitizing residents about adopting best practises for keeping the city clean," explained R.K Mishra, Additional CEO (ACEO), Noida Authority. "For this purpose the NGOs will involve Resident Welfare Associations (RWA)s, female groups, local residents and children groups. The NGOs will organize campaigns, carry out field surveys, drives for bettering the city scape and also identify open defecation points in sectors," he said.
Mishra further explained the responsibility of the appointed NGOs. "The NGOs will also help us in identifying locations for constructing new community or public toilets besides upgrading existing public conveniences in the city besides educating the residents on how to segregate their waste and dispose it scientifically. The aim is to keep the city environs clean and to follow green norms laid down by the National Green Tribunal," Mishra added.
Speaking to TOI, R.S Yadav, Senior Project Engineer (Public Health), Noida Authority said that they would be accepting proposals from NGOs till December 15. "We will soon finalize and appoint the NGO for the purpose," he said.
Currently, Noida generates a whopping 600 tonnes of municipal waste every day. About 1600 health department workers strive to keep the city clean. With the help of individual RWAs, Noida Authority has put into place mechanisms to deal with the garbage generated by hiring garbage collectors on contract, who collect and dispose it in a disorganized manner leaving the city littered and in a mess.
Despite an annual budget of Rs 140 crore, residents complain that the waste is being dumped in an unscientific manner at a temporary landfill sites, leaving residents with a threat of infection and risk of damage to the ground water. There is also no system for treating or recycling the municipal waste scientifically in Noida. At present, sanitation workers collect garbage from 107 sectors, 61 villages including industrial areas and dump it at the temporary landfill site or sometimes in open neighborhood spaces - be it outside residential clusters, on roads, green belts and vacant spaces, complain residents.
