‘Living on borrowed time’ Former Sweden PM claims Theresa May will NOT see Brexit through

THERESA May does not have the support to complete the Brexit process, a former Swedish prime minister has declared in a scathing attack on Number 10.

Theresa May has been described as 'weak' by former Swedish PM Carl Bildt

After failing to agree a deal in Brussels on Monday, Mrs May was roundly attacked by Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer in the Commons today with the shadow Brexit Sectary branding the PM's performance an “embarrassment” to Britain.

Now, Carl Bildt has come forward to suggest Mrs May will not be in Number 10 by the time Britain formally leaves the EU.

Mr Bildt, who served as the Swedish prime minister between 1991 and 1994, made the comments during a recent trip to Washington in his role as chairman of European think-tank European Council on Foreign Relations.

Asked about the Tory government in Westminster, he responded: "The British Government won't survive.”

And while Mrs May prepares to return to Brussels this week to thrash out a Brexit deal, Mr Bildt does not believe she will be able to hold onto her job for long enough to see the process through.

He said: "She's living on borrowed time and is in a very weak position.

“It's very unlikely she'll be the person who completes the Brexit process."

Mr Bildt was a champion of European integration during his brief tenure as prime minister and played a key role in Sweden’s accession to the bloc, with the Scandinavian country becoming a full member on January 1 1995 - less than three months after he left office.

He later served as the minister for foreign affairs and is widely regarded as one of the main architects of the Eastern policy of the EU.

Despite Mr Bildt’s comments, the rise of Euroscepticism in Sweden is tipping the balance to an overall unfavourable view of the EU, a 2016 Pew survey shows.

Last year 44 per cent of Swedes had an unfavourable view of the EU, while 54 per cent looked on the block favourably.

William Hill gives 10/1 odds on Sweden being next to quit the bloc.

There was also unrest in Gothenburg last month as hundreds of anti-EU protesters took to the streets while Brussels chiefs attended a summit in the city.

Protesters at the rally, named the 'Alternative EU Summit', voiced their fury at the policies of the EU and demanded Sweden break away from the bloc.

People at the demonstration criticised EU policies for destroying Swedish jobs and taking power away from the people.

Per Hernmar, vice-president of Sweden's No to the EU movement, unveiled an anti-EU manifesto at the rally, as he spoke about a rising hostility towards the bloc in the country.

He said: "If there is anyone who should be worried, it is the EU leadership - and they are terrified!

"The leaders met in Sweden this week to write meaningless declarations, and all they have done is enforce privatization and increase poverty and inequality."
