Joe Root’s side face a daunting challenge to try and turn things around in Adelaide.
After Australia declared on day 2 on 442-8, England were bowled out in reply for 227.
Australia finished day three on 53-4, a lead of 268.
But James Anderson enjoyed a good spell under the lights, claiming the wickets of Usman Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft.
Day four's play will begin at 3am due to the rain delays.
England will need another fast start if they are going to pull off the seemingly impossible and come away from the second Test with a draw.

"He's scored over 11,000 test runs, he's been one of our most consistent performers for over 10 years.
“He's not had the ideal start to the series, but... I'm not going to lose any sleep over him.
"I'm pretty sure that during this series he's going to make massive contributions and he's going to perform really well for us."
