Jade Butay, the director of Hawaii Department of Transportation said a three-month pilot program will allow ride-hailing services Lyft and Uber to take passengers at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
It will shorten the wait times for customers despite whatever be their transportation preference.
Earlier ride-hailing apps were allowed to drop off passengers but can now pick at two spots the Interisland Terminal and the Overseas Terminal.
Temporary permits have been granted to Uber and Lyft for the program and the companies have agreed to make a payment of 7 percent for prearranged trip fares to the Airports Division.
The current policy will notice major changes as the angered taxi drivers had always argued that the ride-hailing companies have unfair advantage over cabs.
The pilot program had been protested by the taxi drivers.
Without having a pre-arranged customer drivers will not be allowed to solicit customers or wait on airport property.
Andrew Magana, senior manager for Uber in Hawaii said that Oahu residents and visitors will benefit from this affordable transportation option. This will help the uberX drivers and Oahu and help their business and support local economy.
Kirk Safford, Lyft’s senior manager of airports and venues said that the passengers across the country will now come to expect access to ridesharing during their travels. Millions of Oahu residents and visitors can now avail Lyft.
