It's a boy... and the first baby in the U.S. to be born to a mother with a transplanted uterus. Doctors at Baylor Scott & White Research Institute in Dallas say they are thrilled. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DR. GIULIANO TESTA, PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR, SAYING: "My heart goes out to every woman who trusted us in this journey. It was difficult in the beginning. We understand sometimes you have to go through difficulties to enjoy moments like this." The mother, whose name has not been disclosed, was born without a uterus, but after two complex surgeries lasting several hours, she received one from a live donor last year. The baby arrived a month ago. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DR. GIULIANO TESTA, PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR, SAYING: "Now when you see this boy, you really feel like you've done something beautiful, pure, natural ... thank you so much." It's not a world first - eight other children, all in Sweden, have been born to mothers with uterine transplants... but it potentially paves the way to expand surgical opportunities for women in the U. S. who may be candidates.
