Consumers suffer at prices hike of essentials

Price of essential commodities is increasing day by day. Prices of the produces have increased Tk 5 to 10 per kilogram in the kitchen market of the city this week. People are suffering due to greed of some dishonest businessmen.

Brinjal is selling at Tk 50 a kg, carrot Tk 80 a kg, cucumber Tk 40 a kg, potato Tk 20 a kg, papaya Tk 20-25 a kg, bean Tk 40-50 a kg, tomato Tk 80-90 a kg, green tomato Tk 40-50 a kg, cabbage Tk 20-25 per piece, ridge gourd Tk 55-60 a kg, green onions Tk 50 a kg, cauliflower Tk 20-25 a kg, string bean Tk 50-55 a kg and red amaranth Tk 10 per bundle.

Onion price is out of control and soaring. Local onion is selling at Tk 100 a kg while the Indian one is Tk 90.  The price of spices is also much. Cloves is selling Tk 1500-1600 a kg, cardamom Tk 1600-1800 a kg and turmeric Tk 190-200 a kg.

About the rise of essentials price the sellers said the supply of winter vegetables is not sufficient and hampering the markets.

The price of broiler is reduced but prices of beef and mutton have shot up.

Marginal people become embarrassed while buying rice because of its uncontrolled price. Recent initiative taken by the government to control the price of rice has gone in vain.  

Miniket rice is selling at Tk 60 per kg, Najirsahil Tk 68, Indian Atash Tk 47 a kg while the local variety sells at Tk 54.

Dishonest businessmen have increased the food grain price by creating artificial crisis in the market, said Food Minister Quamrul Islam, adding that there is no crisis in the market.

Consumer Association of Bangladesh President Golam Rahman said though the income of people has increased but still there is a pressure of increased expense. Saving is reduced but price of essentials are increasing, it is not a good sign for the country’s economy.
