Govt seeks safety report of khazan bunds

Panaji: The state government on Tuesday directed mamlatdars to submit a safety report of khazan bunds by December 25. The report has been sought in view of the rise in water levels in the state. This could be the first time the government has sought such a report.

Revenue minister Rohan Khaunte said both collectors have been asked to look into the khazan bunds and flooding."If the mamlatdars don't submit a detailed report and there is flooding or cracks on the bunds, it will be on them to fix the problem," he added.

Khazans are saline floodplains along Goa's tidal estuaries. These fertile agricultural lands are reclaimed by bunds (dykes) and sluice gates.
