NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi — who signed a set of nomination papers proposing Rahul for the party's top post — stayed away from the AICC headquarters on Monday in stark contrast to being by her son's side on important events involving him.
His sister Priyanka Vadra, who has always stayed away from the Congress office, stuck to the script on Monday. Her presence at political events is seen to undercut the principal objective of showcasing Rahul and cementing his place in the organisation. A section of the party has long lobbied for the first family's daughter to take up the leadership instead of Rahul. Many said Sonia stayed away as she was reluctant to appear by the side of her son lest it be seen as influencing the internal poll. Rival BJP's potshots at the election could have persuaded her to stay home.
