It isn’t a surprise that established carmakers, especially from Europe, have little to worry about the upcoming deadline of BS-VI grade fuel introduction in India. After all, they’ve been selling Euro VI compatible cars in several markets across the world for quite some time now. In India, the deadline of introducing BS-VI grade of fuel, which is equivalent to Euro VI levels, isn’t far away. While the rest of the country still has a little above two years to work things out and get the prerequisites in place to welcome the cleaner fuel, the capital of the country is set to get the BS-VI grade fuel by April 2018.
Last week, head honcho of Mercedes-Benz India, Roland Folger, said that the company has the required technology available to get BS-VI compatible cars in India well before the April 2020 deadline defined by the government last year. This time around, Swedish carmaker Volvo has made it clear that it is seriously considering launching BS-VI compatible cars ahead of April 2020. For Delhi, with its preponed last date of April 2018, Volvo could introduce compatible cars if the availability of fuel isn’t a problem.
However, Volvo isn’t counting on cleaner fuel for its future growth. The Swedish company has already announced that every model launched from 2019 will have some sort of electrification technology in its powertrain and that would be the beginning to slowly phase out vehicles with ICE (internal combustion engine). Volvo Cars’ global ambition is to sell 1 million (10 lakh) electrified cars by 2025. India is an important market for the Swedes and it, as per the company, will play an important part in this electrification strategy.
