NOID: A group of bike-borne robbers shot dead a 45-year-old trader and injured his friend near Metro Apartment in Sector 71 and made off with Rs 1.15 lakh in cash on Saturday night.

Shri Niwas, a resident of Sadarpur village in Sector 45, died on the spot, while friend Vicky Gupta (30), who took one shot in his left arm, has been admitted to hospital. The two used to supply polythene bags to local shopkeepers during the day and collect payments in the evening.

Police said they were returning home on a bike around 11pm after collecting the money from the local market when three bike-borne men intercepted them at a crossing in Sector 71.

"They tried to snatch our bag (containing the cash) but we resisted. One of them then took out a pistol and aimed at us. I was scared but I caught the pistol and raised the alarm. Shri Niwas (who was riding pillion) also struggled to wade off a second man. However, the third criminal fired a shot at me that hit my left hand," Gupta said.

Soon two more criminals on another bike arrived at the spot to help their accomplices.

Gupta then accelerated the bike but Shri Niwas jumped off and tried to run away from the robbers with the cash bag. The criminals followed him and then shot him dead, before fleeing with the cash bag.

Gupta parked his bike at some distance and called police. The CCTV camera of Sector 71 RWA also captured the moment, when he stopped and made a call. A police team reached the spot and took Gupta to Om Hospital in Sector 66. But he could not tell the whereabouts of Shri Niwas.

After a two-hour-long search, police personnel found Shri Niwas in a pool of blood. He was taken to Kailash Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

On Sunday morning, family members and local people gathered outside the post-mortem house and protested against the poor law and order situation for around two hours. Finally, senior cops reached the spot and assured them of speedy action.

Shri Niwas is survived by wife Geeta Devi (38), two sons Abhishek (20), Arun (14) and a daughter Archana (17). Yatendra Kumar, Shri Niwas's brother, claimed the family had no personal enmity.

Arun Kumar Singh, SP (city), Noida, said a case of murder and robbery had been filed at Phase 3 police station against unknown persons. "We have formed teams and launched a search to arrest the criminals," he added.
