KANPUR: On the first birthday of Khazanchi Nath, SP national president Akhilesh Yadav celebrated the occasion at the airstrip in Saifai, his native village, on Sunday.
Khazanchi, which means treasurer, was born outside a bank on December 2 in Jhinjhak area of Kanpur Dehat.
His mother Sarvesha Devi had gone to withdraw money from Punjab National Bank in Jhinjhak where she gave birth to a baby boy. The family named him Khazanchi Nath.
Sarvesha, along with Khazanchi and her other children arrived in Saifai from Sardarpur, her village in Kanpur Dehat on the invitation of former CM Akhilesh Yadav, on Sunday evening. "Khazanchi and his mother were taken to Saifai airstrip, where our national president showered love and wishes and gave the baby boy birthday gifts before cutting a cake," SP Etawah president Gopal Yadav said.
"His mother Sarvesha was standing in a queue for hours at a bank to collect her widow pension after demonetisation, when her labour pain set in. I later took her to a corner where she delivered the boy," Khazanchi's grand-mother Shashi said.
The then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the baby, who gradually turned into a symbol against demonetisation.
On the first anniversary of demonetisation recently, Akhilesh had asked Jhinjhak nagar panchayat chairman Raj Kumar Yadav to visit Khazanchi Nath's village and hand over Rs 10,000 to his mother.
On Sunday. Akhilesh tweeted: "Khazanchi born during note-ban outside a bank queue is now one-year-old but the bank account of his family is still without cash. They are still standing outside in bank queues and waiting for black money in that fool's paradise. These poor people don't even know what 'Rajnitik Jumla' stands for.
