NEW DELHI. Rahul Gandhi today filed his nomination papers for the post of Congress president at the party headquarters on Akbar Road, reported. Rahul finally put an end to the two-year long speculations in the party circles about his impending elevation.
The Gandhi scion was accompanied by a host of senior leaders including Ahmed Patel, Sheila Dikshit, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Jyotiraditya Scindia among others. Senior party leaders Kamal Nath, Sheila Dikshit, Motilal Vora and Tarun Gogoi filed first set of nominations(as proposers) for the Congress vice-president.
Earlier today, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh threw his weight behind Rahul and said that he will make a "very good Prime Minister". He described Rahul as "mature and competent" and hailed his elevation as a good sign for the party.
Rahul's big moment has been marred by an uprising of sorts from Maharashtra Congress leader Shehzad Poonawala, who called party's internal poll process "rigged" and undemocratic. Poonawala got support from Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, who applauded the rebel Congress leader for his "bravery" and accused the Congress of trying to muzzle his voice.
Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath however rejected the charges made by Modi and instead questioned BJP over internal democracy. Nath asked if "any BJP presidents get elected through ballot process".
Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala too shrugged off the criticism by claiming that the election was being supervised by the Election Commission of India and was therefore "fair".
Meanwhile former PM Manmohan Singh congratulated Rahul calling him "darling of the Congress". He further expressed confidence that the Gandhi scion will carry forward the great traditions of the party.
