Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert: How to save hundreds on your energy bill

Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert, appeared on ITV on The Martin Lewis Money show tonight to tell Britons all they need to know about getting the cheapest deal.

Martin answered a number of very common energy questions in the bid to help UK bill payers save a bit of cash.

What energy comparison site should you use?

In September, Martin claimed comparison sites such as Compare the Market, Go Compare and uSwitch are hiding the best deals from their customers to make profits.

He told tonight's viewers to also use sites that are "Automatically whole of market by default". This means they show all the deals upfront and do not promote the deals that they make commission from.

What are the cheapest tariffs?

Martin said: "It always depends on where you live and how you use, so it’s always worth doing the check on a comparison site."

Martin gave viewers a step-by-step guide to slashing your energy bills. Martin also revealed whether you should trust energy suppliers you have never heard of.  He explained why switching to new companies often doesn't work for customers.

“A supplier launches they launch the cheapest tariff on the market, lots of people flood into it and they don’t have the structure for it and they get really bad customer support and people say switching is a waste of time.”

Some people never get round to switching, but Martin said it is worth calling your supplier up to see if you could get a better deal.

A whopping 60 per cent of Britons have never switched energy providers despite the fact that this means they are more than likely overpaying on their gas and electricity bills.

Shopping around for different providers means you see the whole range of deals out there - and switching every year to make sure you are on the cheapest tariff is the best idea.

With winter on the way and prices rising, Martin and Angellica Bell explain how easy it is to change providers and start saving money on household energy bills.

Some Britons are left at a loss as to whether they should leave their heating on all day to save money, or whether turning heating on or off is cheaper.

Martin said: “Using a timer's best, because your thermostat is designed to turn your heating on and off to keep your home at the temperature you set it. So in general I’d stick with that.”

In September Martin revealed how you can save hundreds of pounds on energy bills, but how important is it to act quickly to make sure you make savings.

Martin Lewis: Can energy users save a significant amount of money with this trick?

Martin, 45, appeared on This Morning in September to discuss energy bills before the chill of winter took hold.

Britons could save a lot of money by making sure they are on their energy providers best deal - and it’s not difficult.

He said: “Winter is the highest-use energy period, and on average most people are overspending by over 30 per cent on their (often £300 a year) simply due to being on the wrong tariff.

“If you’ve not switched in the last 12 months and are with one of the big six – British Gas, EDF, E.on, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE, almost invariably that means you - as you’ll be on their very expensive standard tariff. And if you’re with anyone else, you could still be overpaying too, check.”
