Man Utd news: David de Gea lauded after Arsenal display, Jamie Redknapp makes big claim

JAMIE REDKNAPP reckons Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea ranks only second to Peter Schmeichel in terms of the best Premier League goalkeepers of all time.

De Gea produced an outstanding display on Saturday as Manchester United ran out 3-1 winners away to Arsenal.

The Gunners had 33 attempts on goal, while De Gea made 14 saves in the match - the joint-highest in a league game since the 2003/04 campaign.

The Spaniard foiled Arsenal time and time again, making a series of incredible stops.

And Redknapp has even likened the 27-year-old to a Matrix character.

“I do not think I have seen a better shot-stopper than De Gea,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail

“He is like a character in The Matrix the way he looks as if he is slowing the ball down before making a save!

“What De Gea lacks in physical presence he more than makes up for in agility.

“You will struggle to see a better double-save this season than his effort to deny Alexandre Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez.

“I was working with Shay Given on Saturday and asked him who was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. In a flash he replied De Gea — and that was before the game.

Jamie Redknapp thinks David de Gea is the second best Premier League goalkeeper of all time

“But where does De Gea sit among the best ever Premier League keepers? For me, he is second only to Peter Schmeichel, who is still the No 1.

“Schmeichel was so imposing. Time and again you would be put through one-on-one, make a great connection and feel convinced you had scored — only for him to pull off a sensational save.

“He was the first goalkeeper I remember making his body into a star to be as big as possible. This is now commonplace.”

United face bitter rivals Manchester City next in a top-of-the-table clash at Old Trafford on Sunday (4.30pm).
