High political drama created in the home-town of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s home-town ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally at the commercial capital of Saurashtra region as five person’s arrested by the police on Sunday in connection with the attack on Congress candidate’s brother.
On Saturday late night Congress candidate Indranil Rajguru’s brother Divyanil had to rush to the nearest hospital following attack on him over the dispute related to removal of election banners. Rajguru is the wealthiest candidate in the fray for the 2017 Gujarat elections who is contesting against CM Rupani from Rajkot West constituency.
Following the incident Rajguru, Mitul Donga – Congress candidate for Rajkot East seat and large number of Congress supporters staged protest in-front of Gujarat Chief Minister’s house in Rajkot house as they claimed that the attackers were BJP workers. As the situation was to go out of control, police detained Congress workers including Rajguru and Donga. However they were released later on. BJP supporters on their part accused that Rajguru and some of his supported who staged protest near CM’s house in inebriated state.
In a press-conference on Sunday afternoon, Rajguru said that the allegation made on him was nothing but an attempt of character assassination by the ruling party. He went on to say that if he was drunkard last night, the police would have booked him under Prohibition Act.
He said that at a time his supporters were campaigning peacefully, BJP hooligans interrupted them and attacked on his brother. “The police should take strict action against those elements who are trying to disturb peaceful environment during the election period. We request election commission and other authorities to maintain law and order situation in the constituency,” he added.
In view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally, the security near Saurashtra Kala Kendra society area where Rupani’s residence situated in Rajkot beefed up and entire area cordoned with commandos and police personnel. Sources in the police said that looking to the prevailing situation we would keep tight security arrangement near CM’s residence to avoid any untoward incident till the polling date 9th December.
