Hull City axed head coach Leonid Slutsky on Sunday, December 3

Hull called time on Slutsky’s six-month reign yesterday, citing a failure on the Russian’s part to turn the team’s form around.

The Tigers are 20th in the Championship table, having won just four their 20 league fixtures.

Adkins, who guided Southampton from League One to the Premier League, has been out of work since leaving Sheffield United in May 2016.

Gary Megson is second-favourite with the bookies following a recent two-game stint as West Brom caretaker.

Former Baggies boss Tony Pulis is a 10/1 shot while Paul Lambert is rated a 14/1 chance.

Phil Brown, who took Hull to the Premier League, is 14/1 to return to the club.

Hull chiefs are hoping to make a quick appointment and want a new head coach in place by Saturday’s home game against Brentford.

Tigers’ first-team coach Tony Pennock and goalkeeping coach Pat Mountain are expected to take training in the meantime.

Oleg Yarovinsky, head of club strategy, has also gone with Slutsky.

Discussing his departure, Slutsky said: "I would like to really thank everyone associated with Hull City from the players and staff to the owner and especially the fans.

“I am very proud to have been through this experience, it was challenging but a very exciting time for me.

"Hull City will always be a part of my heart and I wish the team all the very best for the future.”
