WATCH: Max Holloway beats Jose Aldo to a PULP at UFC 218 – Conor McGregor quickly responds

MAX HOLLOWAY left Jose Aldo in a bloody mess after a savage flurry of punches at UFC 218 – and possible future opponent Conor McGregor was quick to respond.

The featherweight champion, 25, successfully defended his belt against Aldo with a brutal third-round TKO at the weekend, in a repeat of their clash at UFC 212.

In fairness to the 31-year-old Brazilian, he only got the call that he would fight a month prior to the event – after original opponent Frankie Edgar pulled out due to injury.

But – having ruled the 145lbs division for four and a half years – not many expected the sheer destruction he suffered at the hands of Holloway.

Aldo (30-4) had success in the early rounds but by the third round, his 22-3 opponent had figured him out.

As punch after punch connected with brutal precision, Aldo's face turned red with blood.

He made a last-ditch attempt at a take-down, but Holloway comfortably countered and continued battering his rival on the floor.

It wasn’t long before the referee called it off – leaving Aldo barely conscious on the canvas.

After the match, McGregor – who has hinted at a rematch with the Hawaii native in the past – made a subtle dig.

He posted a picture to Instagram of a battered and bruised Holloway, taken after his loss to The Notorious in 2013.

In the background, McGregor is seen watching on in a pair of sunglasses, prompting him to comically caption it: “I miss those sunglasses.”

Holloway then fired back on Twitter: “Miss the sunglasses? I bet you also miss 2015 brother. Retired fighters love the past.”

It seems unlikely the pair will fight anytime soon, with Betfair giving the featherweight champ odds of 1/10 to fight Frankie Edgar next.

McGregor, meanwhile, is 6/4 odds-on favourite to face interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
