Fabregas struggled at Chelsea last season with the Spain international falling out of favour under Conte.

However, the former Barcelona and Arsenal star has reborn this season, blossoming following the departure of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.

Fabregas' contract expires in 2019 and reports have suggested his relationship with Conte could force him out of Stamford Bridge.

But, speaking ahead of Chelsea's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, the midfielder lauded his manager and admitted he was glad to have won him round.

"You must adapt and be always ready in training," he told reporters.

"Physically...I wouldn't say better than ever, but in the last few years I feel the fitness.

"I had to adapt myself especially defensively. It's not my biggest strength.

"Last season the boss might not have trusted me to play in a 3-4-3 but he does now.

"I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried - maybe worried is not the right word. I wasn't part of his initial plans.

"You can give up or put your head down, be humble and work hard and show him he is wrong."

Chelsea's 3-5-2 formation seems to be working so far this season.

Eden Hazard has struck up a good relationship with Alvaro Morata, while Fabregas has been pulling the strings in midfield.

And Fabregas thinks the system suits the team.

"It allows me to get into areas where I can be close to Eden and Alvaro and create things," he said.

"You could say freedom.

"We know the boss likes to have discipline in our system and game. In this way, we cover the pitch well. It's working well."
