Elton Johh devastated by death of mum: 'I am in shock'

Taking to Instagram to announce the news, Elton shared a snap of himself and his mum.

"So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning," the superstar wrote.

"I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum."

He added: "Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton."

"Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship."

He added to The Mirror: "However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother’s 90th birthday." 

Elton and Sheila clashed after the singer fell out with two of his oldest friends John Halley and John Reid.

Sheila remained in contact with the pair, causing Elton to take the dispute to heart.

Explaining her side of the argument, Shelia told The Daily Mail: 'I told him [over the phone], 'I'm not about to do that and drop them.

"Bob is like a son to me. He has always been marvellous to me and he lives nearby and keeps an eye on me.'

"Then to my utter amazement, he told me he hated me.

"And he then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother."

For her 90th birthday bash  in 2015, Shelia booked a tribute act of her son to perform as they were still estranged.

Ultimate Elton – singer Paul Bacon – sang the icon's biggest hits.

At one point he was even joined on stage by Elton's friend Kiki Dee for a rendidtion of their Number 1 hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

This year Elton suffered his own health scare after he was unexpectedly rushed to hospital with a life-threatening disease.

Under doctors' orders he was forced to cancel a string of concerts before taking to the stage at Twickenham Stadium in June.

Speaking about the health scare, Elton said: "It's good to be back in Twickenham.

"Thank you for coming out.

"At one point it was touch and go as to if I'd even be here."

He later added: "I was so, so nervous, but it has been an amazing show."
