Everton boss Sam Allardyce to use sports shrink to boost confidence in his stars

SAM ALLARDYCE is drafting in a sports psychologist to help his Everton squad cope with the mental pressure he feels is holding them back.

Sam Allardyce wants to boost the confidence of his Everton stars

The new Toffees manager believes his side need some added brain power to climb up the table – but for the moment his own mind tricks are working just fine.

Having inspired Everton to a thumping 4-0 win against West Ham from the stands on Wednesday before his official appointment, Allardyce collected three points from his first game in the dugout thanks to strikes from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But he said: “If the brain is clear and positive before the lads go out then they produce a positive performance. If the brain is clouded and doubtful you don’t see the player produce the abilities he has.

“That has obviously been seen on a couple of occasions here with the lack of confidence from the lack of results. You have to turn that round as quick as you can and build that confidence and let it grow. Hopefully we can do that.

“What really brings the confidence back at the end as much as the work behind is being given the opportunity to go out and play to their strengths and give their all.”

Sigurdsson got the opener after a clever backheel from Calvert-Lewin. The £45million signing from Swansea is one of the more “clouded” players mentally, according to his new boss, as he has yet to show why Everton splashed such a huge amount on him.

“Absolutely,” said Allardyce. “No disrespect to Swansea, you are playing on a bigger stage and arena so you have to have a greater mentality to come out and produce because the demand is higher.

"These fans have greater demand for a player that comes to play for Everton.”

Calvert-Lewin grabbed the second after a wonderfully weighted pass from the impressive again Wayne Rooney with 17 minutes to go and the striker revealed how Allardyce has given them a new lease of life.

“Everyone feels like they have a new lease of life now,” said Calvert-Lewin. “It is a good time for the manager to come in and I feel he has put his stamp on us pretty early with what he wants us to do and how he wants us to play.

“There is absolutely no fear from our side going into the Merseyside derby now. We have much more confidence after the last two games.”

While midtable Everton appear to be recovering from their early season struggles, Huddersfield are sliding down the table thanks to their woeful away form.

They have lost seven of their last eight away games and have not scored on the road since the opening day of the season.

“We have to keep on fighting, and I have every trust we can change this if we stay focused on ourselves and do not think too much on what happened,” said manager David Wagner.
